Day 22 – Cats and House

  • Posted on November 11, 2012 at 10:08 pm

Today I am thankful for sweet kitty cats who curl up with me and keep me warm.

I am also thankful for my house, for keeping us dry and warm on this late-fall cold and rainy day.

Day 21 – 4H and Lessons

  • Posted on November 10, 2012 at 11:23 pm

Today I am thankful for 4H and all the wonderful lessons and experiences it has enabled for my children. I’m thankful for the many wonderful people we have gotten to know through the program. I’m thankful for the many people there who care about my children. I’m also thankful for the amazing pot-luck we had tonight. As our group leader there said, 4Hers and their parents really do know how to cook!

I’m also thankful for opportunities to teach my children valuable lessons, and for other parents who understand those teaching moments.

Day 20 Games and People to Play them With

  • Posted on November 9, 2012 at 10:10 pm

Today I am thankful for games. Board games especially.

I’m also thankful for people to play games with. This evening, it was just my husband and I, after the kids were in bed. Such a great time to reconnect, have some fun, and get away from other things like homework or housework.

Day 19 – Chiropractor & Ice Packs

  • Posted on November 8, 2012 at 9:34 pm

Today I am thankful for my chiropractor, as my adjustment today has made me feel far better than I have in weeks.

I am also thankful for ice packs and arnica as I fell down the stairs and landed hard on my leg/bad knee. I’ve never managed to give myself a goose-egg on my leg before, but this one is rather impressive. Thankfully, the ice and arnica are doing their thing, and it’s already looking better than it was an hour ago.

Day 18 – Comfort food and Thoughtfulness

  • Posted on November 7, 2012 at 10:32 pm

Today I am thankful for comfort food. Yummy cheese sticks at lunch at school, with happy salad too. This evening my husband made shepherd’s pie, which I love. Simple things make me happy when I’m not feeling well.

I’m also thankful for my sweet youngest child, who insisted upon bringing me her blanket and her special blankie to cuddle up with on the couch as I was laying down before dinner tonight. She has such a huge loving heart, and is so willing to selflessly share what she has with others, if it will help them in any way.

Days 16 & 17 People, Friends and Votes

  • Posted on November 6, 2012 at 10:19 pm

Yesterday, I was thankful for being part of an amazing group of people. We were strangers just two months ago, and now we are a group that shares things close to our hearts with one another, who lift each other up, who care for one another. I got to witness an amazing display of love last night that had most of us in tears. Happy tears!

Today, I am thankful for being able to vote. While the race may be close, and my preferred candidate may not win, I am still thankful that I was able to voice my opinion on the matter – to have a part in choosing who will lead our country for the next four years.

I am also thankful that my kids are interested in the process, and want to know why things are done as they are, and how they fit into that process, even though they are too young yet to cast a vote. They look forward to the day that they will be able to, and I am thankful that they are active learners, and will be well educated about the process long before they ever cast an official vote.

I am also thankful today for good friends who are willing to help us out by watching our kids for us when we cannot. Even though her day was chaotic, she was still willing to help us out in our chaotic day. For this, I am thankful beyond words.

Day 15 – Rest and Games

  • Posted on November 4, 2012 at 11:17 pm

Today, I am thankful for rest. Enough said.

I am also thankful for playing board games with my kids. My kids, especially my oldest, have decided to learn how to play scrabble, and we’ve had a lot of fun this weekend playing with them.

Day 14 – Warranties and Taekwondo

  • Posted on November 3, 2012 at 10:45 pm

Two weeks in as of today, and starting to make this a habit.

Today I am thankful for good tire warranties that allowed my flat tire to be repaired at no charge to us.

I am also thankful for taekwondo, and all the great things it has brought our family. Today my husband and children all tested for and received their next level belts. My oldest is now only two testings away from her black belt. It has done so much for her coordination and self control and self confidence.

Taekwondo has also brought us many new friends, folks we probably wouldn’t have met otherwise. Just this afternoon my kids spent the afternoon at a friend’s house where they had a great time with two new friends… friends we wouldn’t have without tkd. There are many new friends in our lives, thanks to tkd, and for this, I am very thankful.

Day 13 – Scripture

  • Posted on November 2, 2012 at 5:30 pm

13 Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” 14 Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. 15 Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.”

The above is from James 4, the NIV translation.

I have encountered this passage at least 4 or 5 times in the past two weeks, all from different sources.

Somehow, I think this may be a message for me. One I need to hear and take to heart. As I spend time preparing for my upcoming ordination interviews, and the uncertainty that lies both in the interview process, and what will come on the other side, this message gives me comfort that I am not alone. Entering the ministry and putting myself into the United Methodist itinerary system is a big step, and one that I will admit can be scary. I have watched (and helped) friends take big leaps, and move great distances. I think of the friends I have here, and the unknown that lies elsewhere, and it can be overwhelming. And yet, I know that God is in this. God is with us, and all will be well in the end. For this, I give thanks.

Day 12 – Weather and Accomplishments

  • Posted on November 1, 2012 at 11:29 pm

Today begins November 1, a time when many people I know are starting a month of thanks. And here I am with a jump start on it!

Today I’m thankful for beautiful weather. We had a surprisingly beautiful day today, in the mid-70’s. I should have opened the windows it was so beautiful out! Not what one expects here in the mid-west on the first of November, for sure.

I’m also thankful for my kids’ accomplishments. Both are on track for testing for their next taekwondo belts on Saturday. My youngest has managed to just zoom through her current belt in her excitement to stay one belt ahead of her dad. My oldest has been struggling for the past two months to get her last stripe -her final mark of readiness for her belt test. She finally got it today, just in time for her to test for her next belt level. I’m so proud of her for sticking with it, even though she wanted to give up many times along the way. I’m thankful for her perseverance. She really has come a long way.
